沃尔玛公司由美国零售业的传奇人物山姆·沃尔顿先生于1962年在阿肯色州成立。经过四十多年的发展，沃尔玛公司已经成为美国最大的私人雇主和世界上最大的连锁最大零售企业。沃尔玛(WAL-MART)是全球500强榜首企业。至今，沃尔玛己拥有2133家沃尔玛商店，469家山姆会员商店和248家沃尔玛购物广场，遍布各地。2007年7月11日在美国《财富》杂志公布的2007年世界500强排行榜中，美国零售大王沃尔玛公司卷土重来，以3511.39亿美元的年营业收入超过埃克森美孚，再度跃居榜首。2008年7月9日在美国《财富》杂志公布的2008年度世界500强企业排行榜中，沃尔沃公司依然稳坐第一把交椅。

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (or Walmart as written in its new logo) is an American public corporation that runs a chain of large, discount department stores. It is the world's largest public corporation by revenue, according to the 2008 Fortune Global 500.[5] Founded by Sam Walton in 1962, it was incorporated on October 31, 1969, and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. It is the largest private employer in the world and the fourth largest utility or commercial employer, trailing the British National Health Service, and the Indian Railways. Wal-Mart is the largest grocery retailer in the United States, with an estimated 20% of the retail grocery and consumables business. It also owns and operates the North American company, Sam's Club.It operates in Mexico as Walmex, in the UK as ASDA, and in Japan as Seiyu. It has wholly owned operations in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Wal-Mart's investments outside North America have had mixed results: its operations in South America and China are highly successful, while it was forced to pull out of Germany and South Korea when ventures there were unsuccessful.
